Graduates Challenged to Finish Well
As 13 pastors graduated last week in Delhi with Asian Access/India, my colleague, Jeff Johnston gave them a great challenge on the final day of the session. He shared how the game of Chess is often won or lost during the Middle Game for the moves one makes during the middle part of the game can determine the outcome of the match.
Jeff challenged the group to see that the Middle Game in life proves to be a crucial season in ministry as well. Those who maintain a close walk with Christ during the middle years of ministry (attending well to the inner life and their character) are typically the ones who finish well.
This came at a great time for me on the tail end of attending Cape Town 2010. There the theme of integrity rang loud and clear as Chris Wright detailed the importance of this issue in the life of the global church today.
It also dovetails well with a significant research study of Christian leaders showing that "integrity" and "humility" were the two most important challenges facing Christian leaders worldwide.
As I reflect on this further I'm reminded through our devotionals during the session that this is really only possible as we lean on Jesus. On our own strength we are sure to fall but as we "abide in Christ" we will "bear much fruit" (John 15:5)!
So, for those of us in this middle season of life, let's get our game face on and do well during the Middle Game. That way, as we lean on Christ, we will finish well.
